This paper explores the reception of Max Weber in Egypt and the re-contextualization of his terminology in contemporary Egyptian intellectual discourse on secularism with particular emphasis on the writings of Abdelwahab Elmessiri (1938–2008).
In his major works on modernity and secularism as well as his eight-volume Arabic Encyclopedia of the Jews, Judaism and Zionism (1999), Elmessiri states that he is much influenced by German sociologists in general and Max Weber in particular. Elmessiri acknowledges that Max Weber is a dominant voice in his works, and this influence is essential to both the methodology and content of his writings on modernity and secularism. Elmessiri does not even hesitate to state that Max Weber, unlike Karl Marx and Emile Durkheim, serves Arabs to develop an independent epistemological project.
This paper will raise a number of questions that address the reception of Max Weber in Elmessiri’s writings: (1) why does Elmessiri favour Max Weber in developing an independent epistemological project? (2) What are the terms that Elmessiri foregrounds in his appropriation of Weber’s representation of modernity? (3) How these terms are re-contextualized by Elmessiri within the critique of modernity and secularism? (4) What are the new paradigms and/or terminology that Elmessiri has developed in relation to Weber’s vision of modern society?
